The Board and Governance

The National Recreation and Park Association is governed by a 15 to 30 member Board of Directors comprised of advocates and professionals who represent the diverse interest areas and disciplines within the parks and recreation industry. NRPA's Bylaws include details about our governance structure.

The NRPA Board of Directors Is Now Accepting Applications

The NRPA Board of Directors is recruiting individuals for its 2021 board slates and seeks candidates to advance stronger parks and recreation for all in service of NRPA’s Three Pillars: Conservation, Health and Wellness, and Social Equity. Anyone with a strong background in marketing and communications, fundraising and philanthropy, conservation, public policy and advocacy, community planning, diversity, equity and inclusion, innovative parks and recreation management and public health is encouraged to apply.

NRPA Strategic Plan

The full Board of Directors, in collaboration with NRPA staff, drives the strategic planning process. The process establishes strategic priorities to provide a clear and unified focus and direction for the work of the entire association. The strategic plan is the foundation for integrating annual budgeting, resource allocation, and staff performance planning/management processes for the association. It is also a unifying guide for the field to demonstrate the impact agencies can have on their communities.

Ensure Access for All

• Identify knowledge gaps around community needs and who is being best served by parks and recreation; prioritize resources to close the access gap in these communities.
• Provide tools to help members increase community engagement in the development and use of parks, recreation facilities, and programs.
• Develop best practices for increasing access for underserved communities.
• Advocate for federal policy, legislation, and funding that supports equitable access for all to great parks, recreation facilities, and programs.

Create healthy, sustainable, resilient communities

• Build the capacity of park and recreation professionals to understand, assess, and plan for climate resilient communities.
• Promote the adoption of practices that lead to sustainability and resilience, such as green stormwater infrastructure, native landscapes, and habitat protection.
• Elevate the role of parks and recreation in building community resilience to climate hazards through national conversations, partnerships, and peer exchange.
• Elevate the role of parks and recreation in community building through smart growth principles and partnerships that lead to park-centric, healthy, walkable communities.
• Advocate for federal infrastructure and impact investments that leverage the green systems, real estate holdings, and sustainable management practices of parks and recreation that lead to resilient communities.

Harness public will to support parks and recreation
• Build philanthropic capacity to engage individual, foundation and corporate sponsors to support NRPA’s strategic initiatives.
• Deepen NRPA’s reach and impact by engaging with more diverse park and recreation supporters.
• Engage the public and non-profit partners in advocating for policy, legislation, and funding to ensure quality parks and recreation opportunities with equitable access for all, prioritizing where the need is greatest.
• Demonstrate to key stakeholders the tangible, economic benefits of parks and recreation.

Prepare the industry for the future
• Expand and deliver the forward-looking knowledge base required for the design and management of exemplary parks and recreation facilities and programs.
• Advance innovation in practice and theory; develop relevant resources and next practices that serve diverse communities.
• Steer research and thought leadership to identify trends that will impact parks and recreation.
• Engage the field in becoming effective representatives of and advocates for parks and recreation in their local communities.
