AARP Walking Program

One of the easiest and best ways to lose or maintain weight, has just gotten even easier, thanks to AARP and the National Recreation and Park Association. These two organizations have teamed up to promote the benefits of walking for people over the age of 50 by offering the AARP 10-week walking program to park and recreation agencies. The free walking program is part of a broader goal to help prevent chronic disease through increased physical activity.
Studies have shown that regular walking can help significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, arthritis, and even some cancers. Walking programs can also reduce insurance costs, increase employee productivity, and promote mental well-being.
The NRPA-AARP 10-Week Walking Program will highlight the many benefits of parks and recreation in addition to helping participants find safe places to walk, and will provide tools and support to help them take personal responsibility for their health. Selected agencies will receive a free program guidebook, pedometers, and information to provide weekly education sessions on fitness and nutrition.
2009 10-Week Walking Program
NRPA and AARP are collaborating to offer the walking program beginning in the Fall of 2009. Interested agencies are asked to complete a short application; 30 agencies will be selected to receive the free program materials and support. New this year:
- Agencies will be given the opportunity to include an intergenerational component to their program,
- All agencies will be asked to assist their program participants to complete a Walking Audit of the community to determine needed improvements to make the community more pedestrian friendly.
