Let’s Talk – A message from NRPA Board Chair Bob Johnson

Last week, I sent out a message asking for input from you on some of the topics that the NRPA Board will discuss at our meeting in January.

These topics, listed below, resulted from a prior board meeting when discussing “future trends” for parks and recreation. While a few of you responded, many more of you did not. I am giving it one more try.

Please take a moment and let the board know what we should consider as we move forward to plan for our future.

Do you have a particular insight or point-of-view on one of these topics? Do you have a success story to share on your grass roots advocacy efforts? What views do you have on the role of parks and recreation on conservation? How can we, as a field, develop smart economic models – maybe you have one that works?

We want to hear from you – this is a great opportunity to have a say in the future of the field.

Here are the topics:

1. Conservation, sustainability-stewardship
2. Economic models for parks, recreation, and conservation
3. Grass roots advocacy, engaging at the local level

Leave a comment below in the box and I will collect and share your feedback with the board.

Your views are critical to shaping our future.  Seize the opportunity to be heard and share with us the great ideas you have.  We know you have them, so speak up.

NRPA Board Chair

In Maryland, the Department of Education just passed an environmental literacy graduation requirement directing local school systems to provide very child with a meaningful outdoor education experience every year. This is a great opportunity for parks and recreation departments to work with schools to plan and implement quality programs. Let's share best practices and creative ideas to take advantage of this initiative so we can develop future generations of environmental stewards. . . by Lisa Shore on 12/20/2011
