June 2017: Whether it is the local park or trail, along the beach, or just around the neighborhood, nine in 10 Americans walk for leisure or pleasure. Millennials and parents with children in the household walk for leisure or pleasure at their local park more than any other group.

Key Findings

  • 90 percent of Americans walk for leisure or pleasure
  • All generations represent walkers (Millennials 93 percent, Gen Xers 90 percent, Baby Boomers 88 percent)
  • 95 percent of Americans with children in the household walk for leisure or pleasure
  • At a local park, along a beach or river, and around the neighborhood rank as Americans favorite places to walk for leisure or pleasure.
  • Diversity often plays a part in where walking occurs but there remain a high percentage of walkers across all races/ethnicities.
