2009 USTA Recreational Tennis Grant

Round Two of the new 2009 USTA Recreational Tennis Grant is now closed. Applications were due to USTA by May 15, 2009.

Park and Recreation agencies were eligible to apply for this new funding. This is significant because this is the first time the USTA offered a National Grant opportunity for programming/partnerships for park and recreation agencies. Priority was given to park and recreation agencies that are registered as Tennis in the Parks agencies.

There were two (2) categories of grant assistance available.

1. Program/Project Support (grant range: $2,500 - $10,000) For applicants seeking funding to support their general tennis programming, project and equipment needs and meeting these objectives: increase tennis participation, support tennis programming, and foster diversity with both tennis participation and programming.

2. Community Partnership Investment (grant range: $10,000 - $50,000) For applicants seeking funding to establish and/or develop community based partnerships meeting the following objectives: increase tennis participation, support tennis programming, and foster diversity with both tennis participation and programming. The USTA is awarding grants to selected organizations that present a clear vision for establishing community based partnerships to meet these objectives. Proposals should involve all parts of the tennis community and leverage the USTA’s financial investment at the local level. Matching funding is required from the applicant. It is expected that communities that receive this grant will become self-sufficient and not need USTA grants to operate in the future.

This exciting new opportunity gave park and recreation agencies resources to grow tennis, increase participation and use tennis as a vehicle to build stronger, healthier communities.

The online application is now closed.

Public Facility Assistance

The USTA has expanded facility services from offering grants to renovate and upgrade existing facilities to also include assessing, developing, designing, and planning facilities. The USTA is ready to assist your agency with these types of facility projects.

The first step to apply for Public Facility Assistance is to complete the FACILITY ASSISTANCE FORM (you must be a registered TIP agency).

The Facility Assistance Forms may be submitted to the USTA at any time during the year. Communities that complete the on-line inquiry form will be interviewed for clarification and scope of project, as well as possible assignment of specific services. Due to the large volume of inquiry forms being submitted to the USTA, communities should expect to be contacted within four to six weeks of the initial inquiry submission. Please note that special preference will be given to communities expressing an interest in constructing permanent QuickStart courts and/or tennis lines.

Services offered by the USTA could include:

  • Referral for advocacy assistance
  • Concept drawings
  • Color rendering or site specific plans
  • Construction and Maintenance Manual
  • Technical training
  • Invitation to complete a competitive grant application

Please note that TIP communities must be invited to apply for Public Facility Funding and the grant application will only be made available to communities that complete the Facility Assistance Form, complete an interview with the USTA and are invited to apply.

Other Related Information:

  • The USTA accepts and encourages general technical questions (i.e. how high should an indoor building be? Our city wants courts, now what? How high should a net be?). Please direct your questions to technical@usta.com.
  • A copy of the Construction and Maintenance Manual will be made available to all TIP communities courtesy of the USTA upon request.
  • Technical Training Workshops – Throughout the year, the USTA will offer training programs that will focus on facility planning and development, programming, and advocacy. Simply send your name, city, state and statement of interest to technical@usta.com for information on a workshop relevant to your area of interest.
  • The Big Serve, the USTA’s online advocacy resource, is loaded with useful information. An advocacy toolkit is available online and is a must-have for communities that are working towards renovating existing facilities or building new facilities. With the support of tennis lovers like you, the USTA is working to expand the role of tennis in communities across the country.

NRPA and the USTA are committed to provide communities with access to safe, appealing and functional tennis environments. We believe the USTA has the resources and experience to help your agency/organization serve its residents and clientele.

Thank you for all that you do to support tennis in your community!
