With a mission dedicated to fostering "Healthy Lifestyles" and more "Livable Communities", it is critical that NRPA focus on providing a framework of tools and resources to assist in the mobilization of agencies and communities to achieve health promotion goals.
NRPA's Step Up to Health provides you with a nationally branded initiative clearly focused on advancing your role as a park and recreation leader in the health of your community. This award-winning initiative has fortified the national role that NRPA can play to improve the health of our country and to advance community livability.
The positive results of the Hearts ‘N Parks field study resulted in the launch of the NRPA Step Up to Health Initiative. Funded through a grant from the National Football League Youth Football Fund and supported through a partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, NRPA has conducted 32 Step Up to Health Summits since February, 2005. Over 2,250 individuals have attended a summit and over 850 communities have joined the Step Up to Health Movement. The basic premise of the initiative is to:
- Add value to what assets an organization has in place
- Make incremental improvements to ongoing practices
- Advance collaboration with other stakeholders
- Engage the citizens on individual, family, neighborhood and community levels
