Becoming an AFO
The Aquatic Facility Operator
(AFO) program is designed for pool operators and management staff in
aquatic facility operation and management. Certification can be achieved
by passing the AFO Certification examination with a score of seventy-eight percent (78%) or
better. The examination is fifty
questions. Upon achieving a passing score, candidates will be certified for 5 years.
The AFO course is a 2 day instructor led training, with the exam being administered on the second day. Candidates will be provided with a copy of the AFO Manual prior to arriving course. Potential AFOs are highly encouraged to review the manual content prior to arriving to the course. For a complete listing of currently scheduled courses, please view the course schedule.
Candidates that fail score a 78% on the AFO exam must wait 24 hours to retake the exam. Re-tests can be performed by a AFO instructor or by an NRPA approved proctor. Approved proctors include:
- Public Librarian
- University Professor/ or Librarian
- Professional Testing Center Staff
- Professional Development Center Staff
- Military Base Professional Development Center
- NRPA or State Affiliate Staff
- AFO Instructors

Renewal of the AFO Certification ensures that professionals
are knowledgeable of the current best practices in aquatic facility
operation and management. There are two different options for renewal of your AFO. You must complete one of the following options.
Renewal option 1 - Individuals
must successfully passing the AFO examination. This may be achieved by taking the examination (before expiration) in coordination with a Course; or by contacting a professional testing site and completing the AFO Exam Application.
Renewal option 2 -
Completion of 2.0 Continuing Education Units in the aquatic field. Download a list of applicable CEUs.
