6 in 7 U.S. adults say that they are looking forward to outdoor activities this spring and summer. The top outdoor activities by generation are:

  • Gen Z — Swimming
  • Millennials — Visiting a beach or lake
  • Gen X — Going to the park
  • Baby Boomers — Attending picnics or barbecues

Other top activities include hiking, biking and walking on trails. Throughout the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, park and recreation professionals and their agencies have provided people access to safe spaces for recreation.

Each month, through a poll of 1,000 U.S. residents focused on park and recreation issues, NRPA Park Pulse helps tell the park and recreation story. Questions span from the serious to the more lighthearted. The survey was conducted by Wakefield Research.
