May 2017: Over the past 12 months, more than 30 percent of Americans have personally experienced, know someone who has experienced or both parties have experienced food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined as not having regular access to enough food because of financial difficulties. Millennials and Americans with children in the household were at greatest risk.

Key Findings

Those who have personally experienced, know someone who has experienced, or both personally and know of someone who has experienced food insecurity over the past year include:

  • Nearly 100 million Americans (31%)
  • 47% of Millennials

Additionally:

  • Americans with children in the household were nearly twice as likely to have experienced or know someone who experienced food insecurity over the past year compared to Americans with no children in the household (46% vs 25%)
  • More blacks and Hispanics experienced or know someone who experienced food insecurity over the past year than whites (46%, 38% vs 25% respectively)
