
Local recreation centers have something for everyone. U.S. adults were asked to rank what they believe to be the top three most beneficial indoor amenities in local recreation centers. Gym/fitness equipment and indoor swimming pools consistently rank among the top for all demographics. Age, gender and race/ethnicity breakdowns show additional favored benefits coming from indoor sports leagues, childcare offerings, and learning classrooms.
Key Findings:
- Gyms and indoor swimming pools have the broadest appeal to U.S. adults with majorities ranking each among their top three most beneficial indoor recreation center amenities.
- Fitness classes are a strong top three benefit with nearly half of U.S. adults, while indoor sports courts, learning classrooms, community/meeting rooms and childcare are benefits that appeal to roughly one-quarter to one-third of adults.
- Men are significantly more likely than women to rank indoor sports courts and indoor sports leagues among their top three beneficial recreation center amenities.
- Women are significantly more likely than men to select fitness classes and childcare among their top three beneficial recreation center amenities.
- Millennials stand out for indoor sports leagues, with nearly three in ten (29%) placing it among their top three recreation center amenities —the highest of any generation.
- Gen Z is significantly more likely than older generations to include childcare, learning classrooms and community/meeting rooms among its top three choices.
- White respondents are significantly more likely than black respondents to include gym and fitness classes among their top three beneficial recreation center amenities.
- Black and Hispanic respondents are substantially more likely than white respondents to rank indoor sports leagues among their top three beneficial recreation center amenities.
