Families Nationwide Gather to Celebrate Family Health & Fitness Day

(June 8, 2017)

Family Health & Fitness Day is Saturday, June 10

Ashburn, Va. (June 8, 2017) — Families everywhere are encouraged to get active at their local park or recreation center on Saturday, June 10, 2017, for the 20th annual Family Health & Fitness Day. Organized by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), Family Health & Fitness Day promotes the importance of local parks and recreation in keeping communities active and healthy.

Many communities host special events on Family Health & Fitness Day. These events include health fairs, family fun runs, walks, etc. Members of the healthcare community often participate as well. Other communities simply encourage their residents to visit a local park or recreation center where they can participate in a variety of family-friendly activities such as walking, hiking, biking, kayaking, golfing and swimming.

“From helping increase physical activity opportunities to improving access to healthy foods, our nation’s parks and recreation centers are changing the health of communities everywhere,” said Barbara Tulipane, CAE, NRPA president and CEO. “Everyone is invited to discover the benefits of parks and recreation by participating in this year’s Family Health & Fitness Day.”

Parks and recreation departments across the country offer year-round opportunities for families and individuals to get active and fit. In fact, living close to parks and other recreation facilities is consistently related to higher physical activity levels for both adults and youth. Furthermore, the typical park and recreation agency offers something for everyone, regardless of age, income or ability level.

Celebrated the second Saturday of June each year, Family Health & Fitness Day is an opportunity for everyone to get out and discover the health benefits provided by their local parks and recreation department. Families participating in this year’s Family Health & Fitness Day are encouraged to share their photos online using the hashtag #NRPAFamilyFitDay.
