Walking is the best medicine. Just about every media report about the benefits of exercise ends with a suggestion to start walking. Doctors are prescribing it. In 2015, the Surgeon General of the United States issued a Call to Action on Walking and Walkable Communities to get more people active. Parks provide an excellent venue for walking, however, according to a 2018 RAND survey, parks tend to be underutilized for physical activity, especially for moderate to vigorous exercise and for adults and seniors. Walking is a welcoming way to engage these populations — and others. It’s accessible to all bodies from the fit to the unfit, young to old, healthy weight to obese alike. In addition to the health benefits that participants gain, walking and talking together build a sense of camaraderie. When this experience is rooted in the park landscape, that camaraderie grows into community.
