Centers For Disease Control & Prevention

NRPA has worked closely on a number of initiatives starting with a cooperative agreement to promote the Surgeon Generals Report on Physical Activity in 1996.  More recently in 2005 with CDC's VERB campaign to encourage youth physical activity.  The CDC has provided NRPA with over $2 million dollars in co-branded multi-media, resources to assist local Park and Recreation agencies in public visibility efforts.  CDC was also a major partner in NRPA's National Health and Livibility Summit.

Hearts N' Parks

Hearts N' Parks (HNP) was a national, community-based program supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and NRPA.  This program was designed to reduce the growing trend of obesity and the risk of cornoary heart disease in the United States by encouraging Americans of all ages to aim for a healthy weight, follow a heart healthy eating plan, and engage in regular physical activity while taking part in local park and recreation department programs.

Hearts N' Parks has evolved into NRPA's Step Up to Health initiative with over 800 agencies participating.

Health Partnerships in Park & Recreation Organizations

Recognizing the need to evaluate how the parks and recreation profession is benefiting from and contributing to health partnerships, NRPA (with generous funding support from the National Recreation Foundation) contracted with a team of researchers from The Pennsylvania State University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and University of Delaware to gather and analyze baseline nationwide health partnerships data within the profession.
