Nearly 17 million children receive subsidized or free meals at school every year. But what happens when school lets out? For years parks and recreation agencies have delivered healthy, nutritious food and provided comprehensive nutritional education programs through summer programs—feeding about 1.1 million children each year. Now, with the help of a $2.1 million grant from the Walmart Foundation, NRPA will support summer feeding programs of 15 park and recreation agencies each year for two year. The grants will make it possible for agencies to serve an estimated 4.9 million meals to children in 2010 and 2011.

The cutting-edge research papers commissioned by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) were released today.  These five research papers present evidence on the important impact made by parks and recreation in local communities in America.  The papers provide insight into areas of growth, which will enable agencies to adapt to increasing demands and quantify the benefits of their services to local and national decision makers.

2013 Leisure Research Symposium Call for Abstracts: Houston, TX October 8-10, 2013. The Symposium includes both theoretical and applied research that transcends disciplinary boundaries. 

NRPA is working with the National Wildlife Federation’s 10 Million Kids Outdoors campaign. This initiative will propel us over the next three years toward a future when all kids spend time outside each day, creating a generation of happier, healthier, children with more awareness and connection to the natural world.
