 An annual review of fitness participation in America shows numbers that may explain some trends in parks and recreation.74: The percentage of Americans who reported that they participated in some type of fitness activity in 2011.

68.2 million: The number of Americans who are totally inactive (self-reported that they did not participate in any fitness activity or sport during the past 12 months).

27: The percentage of the population who earn less than $25,000 and report as inactive.

12: The percentage of the population who earn between $75,000 and $99,999 and report as inactive.

57.4: The percentage of the population in Wilkes Barre-Scranton, Pennsylvania, who report no exercise in 2011.

112.7 million: The number of individuals who reported walking for fitness in 2011.

7.3: The percentage of increase in running/jogging since 2010.

7.7 million: The number of participants in boot camp-style fitness programs in 2011.

12,966,000: The number of individuals who joined a health club in 2011.

11,752,000: The number of individuals who left a health club in 2011.
