Special NRPA Conference Edition: See you In Indy!

Dear Friends,

I hope to see many, if not all of you, next week at the NRPA Annual Conference in Indianapolis. There's lots of great content and networking opportunities next week, and I'm hoping you also make some time for fun. Whether you’re jogging along the White River or strolling/pedaling/paddling the world class Indianapolis Cultural Trail, I encourage you to get out and about in the Circle City. And, one does need to eat. To help, I enlisted Linda Broadfoot, Director of Indy Parks and food nerd extraordinaire for some of her favorite spots. Happy dining and I look forward to seeing you in Indy!

Linda's Recommendations:

There’s more to Indianapolis than the Indy 500. And downtown steak houses. And, I guess, corn. Sure, we have 211 great parks and an amazing team. But hopefully you’ll see a lot of that while you’re here. I’m also super passionate about where you should eat (or have a beverage).

Black Market
High quality comfort food. It’s my go-to when I don’t know what else
is for dinner. Food is amazing. Cocktails are great. Randomly, a really
robust rum collection. Would be a far walk from the conference but is
certainly accessible by bike, scooter or ride-share. Black Market sits
at the far end of Mas
s Ave, one of Indy’s nicest cultural districts. Get
the pickle plate.

Milktooth
Indy’s most renowned chef takes a creative bite at brunch in the historic Fletcher Place Neighborhood. It’s open for breakfast and lunch, and not open on Tuesdays. It’s one of the best restaurants in the world.

Nada
OK, so it’s right in the heart of downtown, and it’s not locally-owned. But, they have excellent lunch specials and the fried avocado tacos are AMAZING. And, of course, the margaritas are awesome.

City Market
At lunchtime, Duos, Three Carrots and Circle City Soups, will tickle all your taste buds no matter what you are in the mood for. At the end of the day, on the second floor, Tomlinson Tap is a low-key bar stocked full of Indiana craft beer on draft.

Café Patachou
Breakfast, lunch and brunch, all brought to you by the pioneer of local food in Indianapolis.

Napolese
The salads are to die for. The pizza is the best (if you’re into frou-frou pizza like I am). It’s by the same woman that brought us Patachou. I cannot recommend it enough.

Cannonball Brewing and West Fork Distillery
If you have a car or bike and can manage to get just a few blocks beyond downtown, these two places are making a name for themselves in a growing urban neighborhood. There isn’t really a “kitchen” at Cannonball, but you’d be amazed by Chef Erin’s culinary creations. The beer is great. And West Fork is right across the street, and many call it the best distillery in town.

La Margarita
If you can make it down to Fountain Square, my favorite Mexican restaurant is down there. They have great outdoor seating and lots of great stuff.

Siam Square
Also in Fountain Square and with great lunch specials. This is some of the best Thai food in town, and it’s a proven entity long before all the other hipster restaurants followed suit.

Historic Day for the Land and Water Conservation Fund

Last week was a historic step for the Land and Water Conservation Fund as the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources passed legislation that would permanently reauthorize it, while ensuring the stateside program would receive at least 40 percent of the total funding in the program. These fulfill two of NRPA’s goals for reauthorization and, if implemented into law, would be a major success for local park advocates. On Tuesday, NRPA Senior Government Affairs Manager, Kyle Simpson, spoke at an appearance with Secrecetary Ryan Zinke as he announced this year's LWCF allocations at Acadiana Nature Center in Lafayette, Lousiana. Watch Kyle's remarks here.
