This week we heard a Fox News host compare what is happening at the Southern Border to summer camp. Without wading into an incredibly upsetting subject, I thought maybe we should remind this host what exactly summer camp looks like.

  • Summer camp is about fun.
  • Summer camp is about learning.
  • Summer camp is about exploring.
  • Summer camp is optional.
  • Summer camp is about meeting new people and making friends.
  • Summer camp is full of laughter.
  • Summer camps often include pools.
  • Summer camps sometimes include lakes, lightning bugs, campfires, playgrounds, sports or crafts.

I can't help but think that maybe the world would be a better place if all adults took a few weeks every summer and got to experience summer camp again. Your Public Policy Team is going to try our best to make that happen in D.C. at our Summer Camp on Capitol Hill at Garfield Park next Friday, June 29 Let's hope it helps.

Summer Camp on Capitol Hill
NRPA's second annual "Summer Camp on Capitol Hill," kicks off next Friday, June 29 at Garfield Park. Members of Congress and their staff will be attending the event to re-discover all that summer camp offers with a variety of activities children typically enjoy during summer camp and out-of-school time, including soccer, arts and crafts, yoga, Commit To Health nutrition education activities and more. The event, organized by NRPA's Public Policy Team, will demonstrate firsthand how federal funding, such as the 21st Century Community Learning Program and the Summer Food Service Program, is critical to fostering healthier youth through out-of-school time programs offered at park and recreation facilities nationwide.

Park and Recreation Month
While friends and members of NRPA already celebrate July as Park and Recreation Month, a new resolution was introduced by U.S. Representatives Glenn "GT" Thompson and Niki Tsongas to officially recognize the designation. Representative Glenn Thompson spoke to the House floor about the recently introduced legislation, citing the numerous benefits federal, state and local public park and recreation systems offer communities. The NRPA Public Policy Team helped draft the resolution and looks forward to the introduction of the Senate version in a few weeks.
