President Hosts Historic White House Conference on Conservation-NRPA Members and Leaders Attend

NRPA leaders, members, and staff participated in a historic White House Conference on conservation and recreation in America on April 19, 2010. This Conference, the first of its kind in more than 100 years since Teddy Roosevelt last convened such a gathering in 1908, was intended to initiate a nationwide conversation about the future needs for recreation in America and the conservation challenges facing our nation. The goals of the President's "America's Great Outdoors" initiative are to determine what should be contained in a new vision for conservation and outdoor recreation in the 21st century and then to develop a plan to implement this vision.

Capitol Hill Briefing on Urban Parks

The newly formed Urban Parks Taskforce of the U.S. House Urban Caucus held a Congressional briefing on Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 to highlight the importance of urban parks in building healthy, livable, and sustainable communities. NRPA's CEO, Barbara Tulipane, moderated an informative panel discussion featuring former NFL star and current landscape architect, Eddie George. The impressive panel also included Dr. Joe Hughes of the Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Engineering, Dr. Susan Wachter of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and Salin Geevarghese of the Office of Housing and Urban Development.

NRPA Participates in White House Convening on Childhood Obesity and First Lady's "Let's Move" Campaign

The Task Force on Childhood Obesity, a broadly based group from the federal agencies and White House Domestic Policy Council, hosted a special "convening" at the White House on April 9, to hear remarks by First Lady Michelle Obama and discuss the next steps in implementing the President's Executive Order on Childhood Obesity.

FY 11 Appropriations

Earlier this year, Rep. John Murtha (D-PA), who was the Chair of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, passed away. His death has caused a shift in leadership for the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee. Rep. Norm Dicks (D-WA) who was the chair of that committee, has been appointed to chair the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, and Jim Moran (D-VA) from Alexandria, VA has been appointed chair of the Interior Subcommittee.

Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant Program Expected to Offer Opportunities and Funding for Parks and Recreation

The long-awaited Notice of Available Funds (NOFA) from HUD for the first phase of the Sustainable Communities Planning Grant Program is expected in early May. The purpose of this new federal grant program is to support regional planning efforts that integrate housing, transportation, environmental impact, economic development, and community health and livability.
