Trails across the United States help connect people to nature, foster active modes of transportation such as walking and biking, and by their
very nature, help protect natural places - making communities more livable.
Frequent usage and weather takes
its toll on trails, requiring significant on-going maintenance by park and
recreation departments. Through the support of the Darden Foundation and
LongHorn Steakhouse, NRPA's Great American Trails program has awarded grants to refurbish and improve trails in local parks across the country.
The following communities are participating in the 2013 Great American Trails program:
- City of Chandler Park Development and Operations, Chandler AZ
- Miami Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces, Miami FL
- City of Indianapolis Parks and Recreation, Indianapolis, IN
- City of St. Louis Parks, Recreation and Forestry, St. Louis, MO
- Town of Cheektowaga Youth & Recreational Services, Cheektowaga, NY
- City of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, Philadelphia, PA
- City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation, Lubbock, TX
- City of South Jordan Public Works, South Jordan, UT
Employees from LongHorn Steakhouse, part of the Darden family of restaurants, will lend a hand to the local Great American Trails communities.
